CHAPTER ONE (part sample)

THE BUSH FAIRIES

Who has heard of the Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise, in Queensland, Australia?

If you have been to the surfing beach there, you must have seen Ridgie! He is the best surfer on the Coast, because, being made of wood, he never sinks! If he falls off his surfboard and is lost below the wavesjust watch and wait! He will surface again and float! Wood always floats!

Yes, he is a delightful, happy-go-lucky chap who has always loved to surf and swim. He runs down to the beach after school and every weekend, with his surfboard tucked under his arm. However, as perfect as his life may appear to be, lately he has become rather restless and dissatisfied.

Ridgie was made by a clever wood-turner named Richard. Then one magic night, the beach fairy wished him alive! What a surprise for Richard the next morning! Now Richard could pass on all his knowledge to Ridgie! There was just one problem. Although Ridgie loved his mum and dad and his wonderful life on the Gold Coast, he was lonely sometimes. Being made of wood, he was not able to run as fast as the other children in his street, so he felt he didn’t quite fit in. Oh, if only he had a real best friend like himself. After his dad taught him to wood-turn, he did make himself a pretend friend and named him Elfie, a cute little elf, whom he took everywhere. Ridgie talked to him all the time, but Elfie never answered. He was only a wooden, model elf - not real, like Ridgie!
