About the author

Nicholas Maine was born Nicholas Maina in Newcastle NSW in July 1922. During his third year his parents moved to Armidale NSW where he made many friends during his school years prior to enlisting in Brisbane.

Nick served for almost six years during the war years where he endeavoured to join his school mates in the 2/2nd Infantry Battalion and this story relates to his trials and tribulations in his attempts to get there which involved age misrepresentations, forged parent's signatures, three enlistments and two desertions and stowing away 3,000 miles. But on the positive side he obtained three trade groupings to become the highest paid infantry private.

This story relates how fate kept avoiding him in his endeavours to join them until finally after four years in early 1944 when he had already spent one year in New Guinea and was being repatriated home he finally succeeded just as the 2/2nd battalion was returning to New Guinea for further action. This resulted in Nick remaining in action until the war finished one year later.

After the war Nick trained as a PMG technician and T.V. technician while at the same time personally building three houses to finally achieve one of his own without any debts.

Being aware of the loss of so many good young lives during the war Nick became disgusted with scheming politicians who were betraying these young men who had given their all to keep the alien from our shores so during the mid 1950s he formed a political union to oppose those politicians who for political gain were breaking down our restricted immigration policy which had protected our wonderful lifestyle for so many years - but that's another story!

PREFACE

Now don't get me wrong, I did turn out to be a good soldier. It was only a matter of getting me to the front line where, not only all the action was, but where the real manhood of Australia was, with whom I wished to be identified.

I have really picked out the more humorous events of my undulating experiences in the services. Much of the time, particularly after I got away, I was a fairly good soldier and reasonably respectful of authority. I even forfeited my repatriation  home so that I could transfer to the 2/2nd Infantry Battalion which was then in action. Not many can equal that! At one stage I almost went under my own steam in my efforts to get away. I was prepared to soldier on with the Aussies or the Yanks, which of course would have been without pay, as happened to others who had preceded me and unofficially joined another unit unknown to those in charge. I also volunteered to go out on patrols - don't ask me why, I must have been crazy. Anyway when the time came I reckon I did my bit.

Now all these years later, I have come to realize that all those fine young men died for nothing, for our scheming politicians are betraying us and flooding racial aliens at an alarming rate into our country, many of our suburbs are already swamped and have lost all semblance of an Australian community.
